The following is not a petition – it is information that enables you to educate yourself and send your own personal thoughts to the University of Notre Dame.
March 25, 2009
Nikolas T. Nikas, President and General Counsel of Bioethics Defense Fund, issued the following statement regarding the announcement that President Barack Obama will be the principal speaker and the recipient of an honorary doctor of laws degree at the University of Notre Dame’s 164th University Commencement Ceremony on May 17, 2009:
Notre Dame's decision to bestow an honorary doctor of laws degree to a President who aggressively promotes and executes the agenda of the culture of death is completely ill-conceived, scandalous and further evidence that Notre Dame is more concerned with secular academic prestige than it is with its Catholic identity.
At this critical time in our history, when forces of utilitarianism and relativism put literally millions of human beings at risk of destruction, it is shocking and revealing that Notre Dame welcomes falsehood, rather than "speak uncomfortable truths which do not please public opinion, but which are necessary to safeguard the authentic good of society." (John Paul II, Ex Corde Ecclesia, 32.)
As a Notre Dame graduate (BA, 79; MA 81), and as an attorney who has dedicated my law practice to restoring the sanctity of human life to law, policy and culture, I join with my fellow alumni and all faithful Catholics around the nation in denouncing this grave scandal. Our Lady must weep at the morally illicit decision made by those charged with the responsibility to balance properly Notre Dame's commitment to freedom and truth.
Bioethics Defense Fund commends Bishop John D’Arcy, whose diocese includes Notre Dame, for his prayerful decision to boycott the graduation. When discussing President Obama’s order on unrestricted embryonic stem cell research, the Bishop shares the insight that "[w]hile claiming to separate politics from science, [President Obama] has in fact separated science from ethics.”
Bioethics Defense Fund encourages Catholics and all pro-life citizens of good will to do 3 things:
- Join Bishop D’Arcy in his prayer asking “Our Lady to intercede for the university named in her honor, that it may recommit itself to the primacy of truth over prestige.”
- Educate yourself about President Obama’s seven “Culture of Death Accomplishments.”
- Click HERE to tell Notre Dame in your own words what you think about its decision to invite and honor President Obama. Your personal email will go to Notre Dame’s office of development.
